A kicksled is a traditional arctic vehicle consisting of a wooden frame with a seat on the front atop a pair of ski-like steel runners. It is powered by kicking off from the ground, in much the same way as a scooter, and glides smoothly and swiftly across packed ice and snow. You can reach speeds of between 9 – 12 mph on level ground, and travel much faster downhill or with a tailwind. The only skills you need to ride a kicksled are courage and a sense of adventure – kicksledding is simple, safe, and you will find it easy to keep your balance. A kicksled ride is both an exhilarating outdoor activity, and a time-honored way of traveling through the tundra.
